Child’s Play

Chucky from Child’s Play – Where it Began!

The 1988 release of Child’s Play was certainly a turning point in horror movie production.  Interestingly, Chucky, the main character’s full name was Charles Lee Ray which was derived from three well known notorious killers being Charles Manson, the infamous Lee Harvey Oswold and of course, James Earl Ray.  Child’s Play was expected to be a success before it was even released and certainly did not disappoint.

Child’s Play Plot

Charles Lee Ray, who was otherwise called The Lakeshore Strangler, was shot and mortally wounded by Detective Mike Norris.  Before Charles dies, he runs into a toy store where he finds Good Guy dolls, quickly he performs a voodoo ritual so that this soul can be transferred into a doll.  At this point in Child’s Play, lighting strikes the store and it burns completely down.

The next scene in Child’s Play opens with Andy Barclay, a six year old boy, telling his mother Karen how much he wants one of those Good Guy dolls as his birthday present.  Karen, who has been widowed, buys a doll from a street peddler because she cannot afford to pay full price.  Of course, this is the same doll now housing the soul of Charles Lee Ray.  This is where Child’s Play gets interesting!

While Andy is playing with the doll, he introduces himself as Chucky.  That evening, Maggie Peterson is babysitting and scolds Andy for placing Chucky in front of the television and turning the news on but Andy didn’t  do.  He denies it and is sent to bed so Chucky kills Maggie with a hammer and she falls out of the window.

Shortly after this scene in Child’s Play, Chucky blows up a house that has belonged to Eddie Caputo who had betrayed him.  Andy is found by the crime scene and is placed in a psychiatric ward.

Karen realizes that the doll has no batteries and believes he is behind these events so she threatens Chucky that she will throw him in the fire so he comes alive, bites her and runs away.  Soon after, the homeless man who sold the doll to Karen admits where it came from and the detective believes it is Charles Lee Ray after he is personally attacked.

Chucky soon finds out from his voodoo teacher that he will die if he doesn’t transfer his soul to a human so he decides he wants to be six years old again and heads to get Andy out of the psychiatric unit.  While helping Andy escape, he electrocutes and kills a doctor in the process.

The end of Child’s Play is taken back at the apartment.  When Karen and the detective arrive, they find Andy unconscious and Chucky about to transfer his soul.  Karen throws the doll into the fireplace after a heated battle and before Andy lights it, Chucky offers him his Friends to the End remark.  Andy ignores him and throws in a match.  As they turn to help the wounded detective, they realize the doll is gone.  Chucky reappears, chasing Karen and Andy who hide in a bedroom.  Karen shoots Chucky, scattering various body parts but misses his heart.

The detective’s partner arrives and these body parts begin attacking on Chucky’s command.  Detective Norris comes to and shoots Chucky in the heart, killing him.  Child’s Play ends with Andy looking at Chucky one final time before they leave.
