The Plot
A Nightmare on Elm Street begins with Tina Gray having a dream that she is in a dark boiler room being stalked by a frightening figure who has razor-sharp knives in his right hand instead of fingers. Luckily, she wakes up when he catches her but she quickly notices that there are knife marks in her nightgown.
The next day in A Nightmare on Elm Street, she finds that Nancy Thompson had a really similar dream. Since Tina is so distraught over the whole ordeal and the coincidence, Nancy and Glen, her boyfriend, decide to have a sleepover with her to make her feel better. Then, Rod Lane, Tina’s boyfriend also shows up. Rod and Tina are having sex and when they are through, the first great murder in A Nightmare on Elm Street occurs.
This time in Tina’s nightmare, the man catches her and when Rod is awaken, he sees her being slashed up with invisible
knives and dragged around the room. Of course, Rod is blamed and put in jail.
Shortly after, Nancy is having nightmares again so she goes to the jail to visit Rod. After talking to him, she is convinced there is a connection. In her next dream, she sees Rod in his jail cell along with the mysterious figure so her and Glen rush there only to find him dead. It is ruled a suicide but they know better!
It is easy to tell that Nancy’s mother, Marge, is hiding something in A Nightmare on Elm Street. She takes Nancy to a clinic that specializes in dream therapy so she can get some sleep. When Nancy wakes up, not only is her arm cut, she brought the killer’s hat with her out of her dream state.
Marge tells Nancy that it belonged to a man named Fred Krueger who murdered 20 children a decade prior. She also tells Nancy that vengeful parents took it upon themselves to burn him to death and how she thinks he may be taking it out on the children of those who were involved.
Later in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Glen and Nancy create a plan to catch the killer but Glen falls asleep and is murdered, leaving her alone to deal with Krueger. She gets him to chase her into traps she created and sets him on fire but he escapes. Soon, Nancy and her father have to watch Krueger smothering Marge so she is burned to death.
Nancy sends her father away so that she can face Krueger alone and she destroys him by draining his energy. This of course is done by showing no fear and turning her back away from him.
A Nightmare on Elm Street ends with Nancy getting in the car with Glen and her friends the next morning, everyone very much alive. That is, until Krueger possesses the car and speeds off with them inside!
