In the movies prior to Land of the Dead, most of the human civilization was destroyed by the recently dead who would come back to life and feed on flesh.
Many survivors have fled to Pittsburgh where there is a feudal-like government in effect. The city is considered a safe place for humans as there is an electric barricade on one side and water on the other three sides. The center of the city in Land of the Dead is called Fiddler’s Green. This area is luxurious, rich and powerful, ruled by Paul Kaufman but the rest of the city lives in poverty.
Kaufman is the most powerful character in Land of the Dead. He financed a heavily armored vehicle called Dead Reckoning to venture out among the undead with ease. The vehicle is armed with video cameras and external heavy machine gums and it acts as a firework display, attracting the zombies to it so humans can move throughout the streets unnoticed. The designer and commander of Dead Reckoning is Riley Denbo, who is highly respected by the people in the city for how much he has helped to save them.
A few interesting scenes occur in Land of the Dead which involves Denbo and a few others being arrested. Meanwhile, Cholo DeMora, who is second in command has gone renegade after he was turned down for an apartment that he wanted to by in Fiddler’s Green. He threatens to use Dead Reckoning to destroy the upper class area if his demands
are ignored and as he is leaving, zombies begin attacking.
Chaos overcomes the city now in Land of the Dead and there is a new leader among the zombies named Big Daddy. He teaches the zombies to overcome human defense and use firearms. Soon, the zombies are learning how to adapt and communicate. Big Daddy realizes that he can lead his followers to the city by walking on the floor of the lake and crossing over.
When the zombies arrive at Fiddler’s Green in Land of the Dead, Kaufman watches his city being destroyed and realizes they are trapped. He plans to escape in his Lincoln Town Car parked in an underground garage and soon you see big Daddy pumping it full of gas through a hole in the windshield. The car Kaufman planned to escape in, ironically becomes his cause of
death through an explosion.
The next scene in Land of the dead shows Denbo using the Dead Reckoning to free inhabitants in the city. When they reach the electric fence, they discover a massive massacre has occurred. It is also found that some of the lower class residents of the city have survived and are hiding elsewhere.
It seems as though the zombies were only trying to destroy the elite. Land of the Dead ends with the people in the vehicle having a clear shot to kill Big Daddy but Riley puts a stop to it. He is compassionate and realizes the zombies are just looking for a place to go, the same way they are. Denbo leaves the city in Dead Reckoning with his friends, shooting off fireworks as a celebration.
