Survival of the Dead

Will Survival of the Dead be the Last in the Living Dead Series?

Unfortunately, Survival of the Dead was the smallest revenue earner in the Dead Series.  Romero’s quality certainly hasn’t decreased however with the mass amounts of horror movies being made, he is no longer the biggest fish in the Sea.

That being said, the movie was just released straight to DVD in March of 2010 so there is still room for sales to blossom, especially if Romero decides to make Survival of the Dead the last film and release a collection of the entire Dead Series.

Survival of the Dead opens by introducing Sergeant Crockett and National Guard members, Kenny, Francisco and Tomboy.  Meanwhile, there are two Irish families feuding on Plum Island off the coast of Delaware.  The O’Flynns, lead by Patrick are making every effort to kill the undead on the island but then they find out that Seamus Muldoon and his family are trying to keep their undead family members alive until they can find a cure.

Survival of the Dead jumps ahead three weeks and the National Guard group are joined by a guy named Boy after they run into other zombie killers.  Boy tells them of the connection he has to the O’Flynns and shows videos of the happenings so they all head there.  All of the O’Flynn family in Survival of the Dead are killed by zombies except for Patrick.

Once driving on the island, it is found that the Muldoons have gone and chained up the zombies that they know in their natural habitat.  For example, the mailman is chained to a mailbox.  The Muldoons scout out the visitors, shooting Kenny and Sergeant Crockett.  Kenny dies but Boy works hard to stitch the Sergeant back up.  Meanwhile, Francisco is getting sick from ingesting zombie blood earlier in a battle and biting a finger off.  He asks to be shot before he becomes undead, Tomboy agrees.

The big battle scene in Survival of the Dead occurs at a bridge by a river that separates the Muldoon and O’Flynn property.  The Muldoons are trying to prove the ghouls are still human so try to make their zombie daughter eat a horse rather than a person.  Of course, chaos erupts, there is a gun battle and the zombies are happy to feed on all of the injured.

O’Flynn and Muldoon have one bullet left each and they come to a truce but as soon as O’Flynn turns, Muldoon shoots him in the back.  O’Flynn reaches for a secret gun that he had hidden in his sleeve and kills Muldoon.

Survival of the Dead ends with Crockett, Tomboy and Boy refusing to die on the island so they return to the ferry to escape.  Meanwhile, the zombified Muldoon and Patrick are seen on a hill together.  They’re both holding their guns and plan on killing one another one last time in their zombie state however, they don’t realize that neither of them have any bullets left in their guns.
