Deader

Directed once again by Rick Bota, (Hellraiser) Deader is the seventh film in the series featuring Pinhead and his cenobites.  Released in June of 2005, it was the third installment to go straight to DVD.  Although the $4 million budget was higher than the film’s two predecessors, fans were once again left wondering where all the extra money went.

(Hellraiser) Deader opens following a gorgeous reporter named Amy who is know for always getting her story, even the darker ones!  She is offered a project to look into a group known as the Deaders, led by Winter, that are suggested to be some cult where they commit suicide so their leader can bring them back to life.  Amy heads to Bucharest in search of someone belonging to the group.

When Amy arrives at the address she’s been given on Deader, there is a dead girl along with the infamous puzzle box that Hellraiser fans are more than familiar with.  Even though Marla (the corpse) tells her not to open the puzzle, Amy really cannot resist once she gets back to her hotel.

Pinhead makes his debut in Deader and warns her that she is in danger.  Marla talks to Amy once again, tells her to head to the Bucharest subway and ask around for someone named Joey.  When Amy meets  up with him, he tries to talk her out of going after her story on the cult but she is determined to follow through.

When Amy arrives at the cult’s home in (Hellraiser) Deader, she sees a man being brought back to life.  Winter tries to draw her in and she almost falls for it and comes close to death.  Fortunately for Amy, the cenobites appear and begin to shred Winter to pieces.  While cenobites rarely take sides, they are furious with Winter for invading their soul and don’t even acknowledge Amy at first but they eventually decide to go after her.  Unwilling to give her soul to them, she commits suicide.

(Hellraiser) Deader ends with Charles (a movie editor), talking some new reporter into a similar mystery.  Then, despite the fact that a huge explosion takes down the entire building, the puzzle box is left unharmed.

Concerns

While some have suggested that this movie was so unpolished because of budget issues, one has to argue that Clive Barker made the original movie work on a fraction of the budget.  Not to mention, the cenobites don’t even make an appearance until the end of the movie which is quite disappointing.
