Hell On Earth
1992 brought the release of Hell On Earth, the third installment in the Hellraiser series with Pinhead and his Cenobites. This was also the first in the series to be directed in the United States rather than the United Kingdom.

Hell On Earth didn’t see the profit that the others did and also had a somewhat small budget that most was used to build The Boiler Room. In fact, the budget was so tight that many of the extras were just friends and members of the crew.
There were a few snags they also ran into when creating Hell On Earth. Pinhead needed a church to mimic Jesus Christ in but no churches would allow them to use their building to shoot the scene.
Needless to say, they ended up creating a simple illusion of the church with an alter and walkway but then they had to deal with getting Pinhead’s makeup right for direct sunlight which had never been done before.
Hell On Earth Plot
When Hellraiser 2 ended, Pinhead was trapped in the puzzle box with many distorted faces and withering figures, etched into an intricately carved pillar known as the Pillar of Souls. Hellbound introduces J.P. Monroe, the rich and
spoiled owner of The Boiler Room nightclub.
Joey Summerskill, a young and overly ambitious television reporter has learned about a mysterious puzzle box and Pinhead. She is introduced first hand to the violent pain that the box can inflict when she witnesses a teenager in a hospital room being ripped apart by chains. Joey tracks the young woman named Terri and the puzzle box to The Boiler Room where it was stolen from.
Joey and Terri work together and watch Kristy Cotton’s video tape interview from when she was first admitted to the Channard Institute. They learn about the Lament Configuration, the demonic Cenobites and how to send Pinhead straight back to Hell.
Pinhead is dormant for awhile in Hell On Earth and then one day, hooks shoot from a pillar, ripping apart Brittany Virtue, a club-goer who had just slept with Monroe. After she is murdered, she is consumed by Pinhead and her face shows up in the pillar. Monroe is persuaded by Pinhead to bring him more club-goers so he can become freed by feeding on their blood.
Meanwhile in Hell On Earth, Joey is walking around corpse-filled trenches with Elliot Spencer, a British Army Officer from World War I. He explains that Pinhead is the manifestation of his dark side but that Pinhead is out of control because he is no longer controlled by Hell.
The Cenobites were always ruled by order now they are simply chaotic. Pinhead slaughters everyone partying at The Boiler Room and even creates a few Cenobites while he’s at it. He is on a mission to permanently destroy the puzzle box, this way he’ll never be sent back to hell again.
Thinking fast, Joey knows she has to create a plan in Hell on Earth to send Pinhead back to his human self or the mortal world would forever be doomed with pain and suffering. The best part of the movie is that Joey calls him Pinhead which is really an unofficial nickname given but never used.
