Hellraiser Inferno

Released in October, 2000, (Hellraiser) Inferno was the first film in the series to bypass the movie theater and go straight to DVD.  This psychosocial thriller was rather disappointing to fans because as you would expect the gore level to increase with each sequel, Inferno actually let you know there was a  murder taking place but you weren’t granted access to all of the blood that you would like to see.

Although (Hellraiser) Inferno was dubbed as a must see for fans, it was mostly people who had never watched the film’s predecessors who actually liked it.  True Pinhead fans were beyond disappointed.

Plot

A married homicide detective who has a thing for cheating on his wife and snorting a lot of coke, discovers the puzzle box, otherwise known as the Lament Configuration.  The detective finds it at a murder scene, the victim happens to be an old friend of his from high school.

Despite the fact that you assume this detective in Inferno is an idiot, he actually solves the puzzle, turning his life into a whirlwind.  More murders take place and a child’s finger is found at each crime scene.

The homicide detective goes on a mission to find a guy known as The Engineer, a legend with the police force.  Soon, the detective starts to see eyeless cenobites (demons) committing murders and he even manages to videotape one but oddly, he is the only one who can see these demons.

The detective’s life takes a huge change.  He has a few God encounters and can even see things before they happen.  Joseph even has visions of a nail-pierced hand belonging to Jesus and his sins take a huge toll on his family.  Pinhead makes it clear to Joseph what the result is for the choices he has made.  Some question if (Hellraiser) Inferno was really meant to be a religious movie because of all the happenings.  The movie ends with Joseph’s flesh being hooked to heavy chains as he is welcomed to Hell.

Complaints

Although Scott Derrickson was given a $2 million budget, it is pretty unclear just where that money went in Hellraiser (Inferno).  Pinhead appears briefly and doesn’t look nearly as good as he has in the past and there are barely any cenobites at all.  This series is know for its gore and outrageous killings but Inferno falls short.

The beginning of the movie is decent for those who enjoy a good murder mystery but by the middle of the plot, it’s easy to lose interest.  Then, the fact that Pinhead appears like the Ghost of Christmas Past only adds to the frustration.
